The environmental advantage
Essential PowerTM generation facilities have strong operational, environmental, health and safety records. More than 75 percent of our total plant generating capacity is only 10 years old, in an industry where many power stations are 40-50 years old. Our generating units have modern environmental controls and are highly efficient. In addition, we are committed to making investments in technology to improve the efficiency and life of these important assets.
Most of our plants are powered by domestic, cleaner-burning natural gas. They emit less than half of the carbon dioxide emitted by the same-sized, coal-fired power stations. Also, they do not have many of the other environmental challenges associated with coal-fired generation such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, particulate matter, mercury or ash. As a result, our carbon footprint is less than half of the typical coal-fired utility power generating fleet. We’re working hard to reduce our carbon footprint across all of our facilities.
